Optimist or Pessimist

This is an update on the tree I chose to adopt on campus. The tree is tall and has straight branches. It is very stiff and doesn’t blow in the wind much. It has not changed much and has stayed very much the same. The bark isn’t that flat and is easy to take it off.

We are reading the Wishtree in class. In the book they talk about how trees and animals get their names so I’ll tell you a little about my name. I got my name Evan because in Judaism it means God is King. My parents decided on the name out of a few others, mainly because of the meaning. In Welsh my name means “youth” or “young warrior” and in Scots it means “right-handed”.

I’m naming my tree Tre because I want to name it Tree but it’s not really an name. And I’m naming my ant Bob because I like the name.

In the Wishtree, Red says he/she is an optimist and says Bongo is a pessimist. An optimist sees life from the good view. And a pessimist sees life as the worst thing could happen so it’s not so surprising.

I think I’m an optimist because I have positive views in school and out of school sports, I try to have a positive view. In baseball, I will keep being positive even if my team is up 15-0 or losing 15-0, and that’s one example of myself being an optimist. In school I have a positive attitude if I get a high-score on a test or a low-score I think of it as a chance to learn something and keep a positive attitude.

Tree Book

This is a project I did in Language Arts:

(These are some photos of the tree book)

Here is how we made the book over the last month:

  1. We used screen printing to put the words on the cover
  2. We collected plants
  3. We put akua ink on a jelly plate and put a plant in the middle to give it a pattern
  4. We cut our covers
  5. Then we collaged with the ink printed paper
  6. We added envelopes to put our writing pieces in

Here is the link to the website of the artist we worked with Ms. Gignoux she helped everybody a lot and showed us  all the steps in doing the art piece:

https://gignouxart.com/

This was a very thoughtful project to do. The writing pieces really made me think about my life so far and the art was fun to do.

Here are my writing pieces:

When This Is Over

by Evan Jackson

When this is over, way we never take for granted

Having a regular conversation with others

Fans at games

Sitting in a movie theater,

Anticipating a great movie

A nice dinner out

Family

Our Community

Schools

Hospitals

Front-line workers

A regular day

Masks that keep us safe

Home

And last but not least being regular people.

When this ends may we find

That we can

Triumph when needed

That we can

Stay safe when needed

That we can

Say we have overcome

A big change in the world

And say we’ve made it through.

SALUTE TO MY ROOTS!

By Evan Jackson

Mom

My mom has had a major impact on my life. She has been there for every step of my journey. She has been kind, loving, and compassionate for as long as I can remember. I’ve had a long journey, whether it is changing schools, playing baseball, running for student council president and winning, there has always been support. This has meant a lot to me because the traits I carry now are the traits she has shown me. She has been an inspiration and motivation to me, and that really means a lot.

Dad

My dad has taught me a lot. I am very into sports, whether it is playing or watching them. They have always been something I love. A lot of that love of sports came from him. He has taught me baseball and basketball, and other very important things. He is very funny also, as we joke around a lot and he always comes up with good jokes. Also, it has been a privilege to be with him while he’s working at Duke. There is a lot I’ve been shown because of him and that means a lot to me.

Sister

My sister is someone I can have fun with. Although she’s in college and we don’t get to see her much anymore, we soak up every second we have with her. She has always been a hard-worker and has been very fun to be around. This is why my sister means a lot to me.

Grandmother

My grandmother is someone I can look up to and love. She really lets the moment decide what will happen. She is very smart and really loves everybody. I love when I get to see her because she is pretty lonely since Covid. But, like I said, it still is the best when I get to see her and I hope that will happen more now that we have a vaccine.

Branches, Reaching Toward the Sky

My Wish Tree

By: Evan Jackson

Evan Jackson’s life goals:

  1. I wish that I can travel to all the states because I want to see what the rest of the U.S is like. Also, I’d like to see what life is like for different people.
  2. I wish that I can someday get a job in the sports industry. This would mean a lot to me because I spend a lot of time watching or playing sports. Also, this has been my dream for a while now, so it would mean even more.
  3. I’d like to get into a very hard college to get into because this means I would have pushed myself through school to reach my goal. Also, I would need to keep my grades up and that’s another goal I have.
  4. I would like to be a straight A student for the rest of my school years. This would mean a lot because I would be carrying the good grades that my parents had and that means a lot. Also, because that I would push myself even harder and that is what I win at doing.
  5. I would like to be kind to all people because that would be doing what my parents have taught me. This means a lot to me because this would be great to do and that can define me not anything else.
  6. I would like to expand the friends I have DA because being a new kid here isn’t easy this year and the more friends I have the easier it is to settle in. Also, it would be good because I can expand the amount of people I know.
  7. I hope that I can travel to all the MLB stadiums across the country because I really like baseball and traveling the country is something I hope to do.
  8. I wish that I can own pets for a long time because I love my cats now and want to have company whenever I need it.
  9. I hope that I can have a family one day because I want to provide for them and keep my family traditions alive and help the world with new people.
  10. I hope that I can achieve all these goals in my life because this would mean so many things to me. And if I can complete all of these I could say that I did the best things in my lifetime.

Wishes for the world:

I wish there was less violence in the world. I hope that we can stop climate change. I wish that everybody can be respectful to each other and can feel safe in the world. Finally, I wish that everyone can have the same life and not be categorized by their identity as a person.

Fingerprinting

  1.  Fingerprints are result of struggle
  2. Before fingerprints there were bone measurements
  3. Some people are born without them
  4. Fingerprint analysis is fallible
  5. Koalas have them
  6. Fingerprints are very durable
  7. Nobody has the two same sets of fingerprints
  8. You can burn your fingerprints, but the scar will become a part of your fingerprint

A fingerprint is formed when a finger touches a surface, leaving behind something that people can use to see who touches an object.

Stock Market Game

We are playing the Stock Market Game based off of the Westing Game. Here’s a photo of our spreadsheet.

We are playing this because we are reading the Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. There’s a character named Turtle Wexler and she thinks that the way to win the Westing Game is to invest in the stock market.
I’m paired with Ethan and Harrison and here’s are company logo:

We invested in Disney because it has a lot of new things on Disney+.

We invested in Sony because of the PS5 coming out and how fast it sold out.

We invested in Amazon because a lot of people are buying online.

We invested in Tesla because it is an expensive car dealership that can make a lot of money so the stocks go up.

We invested in GameStop because despite the big drop from stocks not to long ago maybe there was still some good in buying it.

Finally, we invested in Medipharm because we needed a stock under  $1.

Lady or the Tiger

In class we read Lady or the Tiger by Frank Stockton. Here is a link to the story. He doesn’t provide an ending but I did. Please read the story then read my ending. There are pictures at the end.

http://www.english-literature.uni-bayreuth.de/en/teaching/documents/courses/Stockton1.pdf

Ending:

There was a shmudden moment of silence the accused opened the door. The tiger came out and there was a thwack and then a shwack. The accused did not survive. Poof, a cage came down and that was that. The tiger was in the cage, pulled up into the crowd. And then, released. The semi-barbaric king was very unhappy with these events but little did he know that the tiger was coming for him. Once again this did not end well. There was a shmoosh and the crowd went silent.
